All bite cases coming to the attention of the Chief of Police should be reported to the Animal Control Officer.  While investigating cases in which Animals have bitten a Person or other Animal, the investigator shall immediately notify the Owners of the Animal and require the surrender of the Animal for immediate impoundment.  In the event the Owner of the Animal is not available or is unknown, the police or Animal Control Officer shall cause the Animal to be impounded. The period of impoundment shall be at least ten (10) days. The Animal Control Officer shall authorize the release of the Animal upon the Owner’s payment of all boarding fees and other applicable fees. The Animal Control Officer may authorize the Owner to keep the Animal on the Owner’s Premises, provided that the Owner produces evidence that the Animal is currently vaccinated for rabies.

Kansas Administrative Regulations (K.A.R.) 28-1-13, and amendments thereto, shall be followed concerning the isolation of biting animals for observation, examination and quarantine, unless the provisions of this Chapter require more stringent procedures.
