A CHARTER ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 2 OF CHARTER ORDINANCE NO. 8 AS AMENDED BY CHARTER ORDINANCES NOS. 15 AND 18, EXEMPTING THE CITY OF NEWTON, KANSAS, FROM THE PROVISIONS OF K.S.A. 12-1008, AND PROVIDING FOR THE FIXING OF THE SALARIES OF MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNING BODY OF SAID CITY; REPEALING SECTION 2 OF CHARTER ORDINANCE NO. 8 AS AMENDED BY CHARTER ORDINANCES NOS. 15 AND 18; AND REPEALING CHARTER ORDINANCE NO. 18.

Section 1. That Section 2 of Charter Ordinance No. 8, as amended by charter Ordinances Nos. 15 and 18, be changed and amended to read as follows:

Section 2. The members of the governing body of said city shall receive salaries for their service as follows:

(a)   From the effective date of this ordinance and through the end of the 1994 calendar year, each commissioner other than the mayor shall receive a base salary in the amount of $2,100 per year, payable in monthly installments, and in addition thereto shall receive the sum of $25 for each special or emergency meeting of the governing body at which formal votes· may be taken;

(b)   From the effective date of this ordinance and through the end of the 1994 calendar year, the mayor shall receive a base salary in the amount of $2,700 per year, payable in monthly installments, and in additional thereto shall receive the sum of $30 for each special or emergency meeting of the governing body at which formal votes may be taken. As to each subsequent calendar year, the amount of the base salaries and the additional meeting compensation may be adjusted by th3 same percentage as the average by which the compensation of general employees of the city was adjusted during the preceding calendar year in the form of cost-of-living adjustments. The amount of such adjustments shall be determined annually by resolution of the governing body.
